Interview with Ben, apprentice sheet metal worker

Ben
Apprentice sheet metal worker
Meet Ben, apprentice sheet metal worker at Contour. He shares his experiences and shows why Contour is the place to shape your career in metalworking (further). Whether you are at the start of your career or have already gained plenty of experience, Ben’s story is inspiring.
A flying start: warm welcome and great guidance
“Contour felt like the perfect place to learn and grow right away,” Ben begins. “When I started here about two years ago, I was welcomed with open arms. That first period was crucial: I got direct, proactive support. My supervisor came looking for me, not the other way around. That gave me an enormous boost. As I learned more, my independence grew, but my colleagues’ willingness to help stayed. Everyone here is there for you.”
Seizing opportunities: always one step further
“What I think is great is that at Contour you continuously get the chance to develop and keep growing,” Ben continues enthusiastically. “I started with the basics, such as making test plates and tack welding. Given my background and eagerness to learn, I could move on quickly. Now, for example, I work at the welding robot and am already involved in programming it. That way you keep learning and taking on new challenges. The ambition to move on to, for example, work preparation, like my earlier education, is definitely seen and encouraged here.”
No two days the same: the dynamics of custom work
The variety in the work is another big plus according to Ben. “Because Contour is a supplier to all kinds of high-tech sectors, from machine building to medical equipment, no order is the same. One day you finish several smaller orders, another time you spend a few days intensively on one complex product. That variety keeps it sharp and challenging. And precision is key: we often work accurate to a tenth of a millimeter! That calls for craftsmanship and focus.”

Passion for the trade: the kick of a perfect weld
Asked what he enjoys most, Ben’s face lights up: “My personal favorite? Welding! It really makes me happy. It is the moment when separate parts come together and you actually see the product take shape. You lay the perfect seam and see the result of your craftsmanship right away. That gives you a really good feeling about what you create, a bit of pride.”
Ben’s golden tip for new talent (young and experienced!)
“My advice to everyone who wants to start here, whether you are fresh out of school or bring a lot of experience: be open to feedback and stay eager to learn. If you show that ambition, there are plenty of opportunities at Contour to grow, specialize and do varied work. Here you can really make your mark and become part of a team that delivers top quality!”
