Internship project: building a tool catalog

Contour Covering Technology (CCT) from Winterswijk is a supplier of sheet metal parts and assemblies. Contour offers many capabilities: sheet metal fabrication, welding, powder coating, assembly, cleanroom and adhesive bonding.

Each year, CCT produces around 8,000 different items in 20,000 production orders. Our focus is on small to medium-sized series. The mission of Contour Covering Technology is to supply the manufacturing industry with high-quality sheet metal parts and assemblies. These include cabinets, enclosures, frames, machine covers and complete (electro)mechanical modules.

To supply our customers in the manufacturing industry with the latest products and techniques, knowledge and skills are needed, and it is up to Contour to keep developing constantly. As an intern or thesis student, you can play a part in that!

Internship project

We have a large number of tools for making products on the punching machine and the press brakes. Punching tools can punch, deform, form threads, deburr and more. Bending tools also come in all sizes, so that different kinds of geometry can be produced.

Over the years, the variety of tools has kept growing. A clearly categorized overview of the tools is missing. (The documentation has been collected digitally, but it is not categorized or searchable.) The overview of the tools is therefore not recorded in a searchable way, which means that in practice we depend on one or a few CNC programmers who know for themselves which tools are available.

To share knowledge with work preparation, engineering and sales about what our machines can do with the tooling we have, and also to safeguard continuity in case of staff turnover or illness, there is a need to set up a tool catalog that meets the wishes of the various stakeholders. The research must determine how the tools can best be categorized, which data must be easily searchable, and where it is enough that the data can be traced in the underlying tool documentation.

The catalog must then be kept up to date and actively maintained when tools are added and phased out. A system has to be designed for this, considering which departments or roles are responsible. Each tool also comes with relevant CAD files and data sheets that record the tolerances and how the tools must be used. This documentation must be maintained along with the catalog system and linked to the catalog.

The result of the assignment must be an implemented and populated tool catalog that meets the wishes of the stakeholders, and whose management has been handed over to the responsible departments (so populating the catalog is also part of the assignment).

Internship allowance

If you do an internship at Contour, you receive an appropriate allowance for it. You also receive good supervision from an experienced subject-matter supervisor and a general supervisor during your educational internship.

Who are we looking for?

You are a motivated student of mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and management, or mechatronics. While carrying out this assignment, you can work independently and, when needed, you are a team player. You show initiative, and when things get stuck, you are the persistent type who goes the extra mile and makes the project a success!
