The role

Our customers are the largest high-tech companies in the Netherlands, such as makers of chip-making equipment for the semiconductor industry and of hospital and laboratory equipment. They don’t order once: they send orders and forecasts for items we make again and again, often for years. As an order desk coordinator, you own that picture per customer: all orders, forecasts and contracts together, scheduled so the factory can handle them and the customer is delivered on time. You are the logistics contact for their planners and buyers and report to the supply chain manager.

Elsewhere this role is called inside sales or order management. With us it is more than entering orders: you steer the demand.

Your challenge: a stable demand, together with the customer

Your goal and your customer’s are the same: a stable demand that gives the factory a horizon, and orders scheduled so the work can be planned and spread well across the departments. For that, you get to know your customers well. You understand their orders and know their ordering pattern. You think along on the orders and look for room together with the customer and your colleagues where it is needed: pulling work forward when the factory has room and pushing it out when a department is full, without touching the customer’s assembly. And you move along where you can. The relationship with your customer’s planner and buyer, and building a good flow together: that is what makes the work succeed.

Internally you work with a planner who guards capacity; you confirm orders and dates to the customer, within guidelines you agree together. When an order line falls behind in production, you see it in the WIP tracker, our own overview of the progress of every order line, and you decide yourself: chase internally, escalate, or inform the customer in time.

How we work: the whole order flow digital

At Contour, the order flow runs digitally from intake to shipping in our ERP system. You enter forecasts in it as a capacity signal, and we only confirm what the factory can make in that period. Every production department works from a real-time dashboard; this is how we plan and track more than 85,000 processing steps a year.

Our own software for the order desk

What the ERP system doesn’t offer, we build ourselves. The WIP tracker centrally monitors the progress of every order line in the factory: which operations are still open and how many days are left. Our newest tool processes incoming orders with AI, following rules we set ourselves. So your time goes to judging and deciding.

A selection of your tasks

  • Managing the order book, forecast and contracts per customer as one picture of demand.
  • Converting customer orders into sales orders, validating them against the forecast and confirming them to the customer after acceptance.
  • Handling requests to pull in or push out with the planner, and keeping customer portals in line with the ERP system.
  • Assessing order lines that fall behind in the WIP tracker and informing the customer before the delivery date.
  • Handling complaints and returns on the logistics side and keeping the sales master data of repeat items up to date.

After your first year

By then, this is in place:

  • You know the ordering behavior of every customer in your portfolio and have agreed a way of working with their planner or buyer.
  • The order book and forecast of your customers are complete and current, so planning and revenue planning can run on them.
  • You have made at least one improvement to the order flow, for example connecting a customer through supply chain integration.

Growing: from the order desk into planning or purchasing

On the order desk you get to know the order flow of large high-tech companies and the control of a modern manufacturing company at the same time. You grow by taking on tasks: planning tasks beside the planner, or part of operational purchasing, which sits in the same team. Step by step you build toward a role as production planner or buyer, with training where it helps. In time you can also take on supply chain engineer tasks, such as setting up supply chain integration with customers.

This is you: customer-focused and decisive

You like a full order book and enjoy building a relationship with your customers. You take their planner or buyer seriously, and you are taken seriously, because you draw your arguments from the order book and the WIP tracker.

What you bring:

  • MBO+ or HBO level (vocational plus or bachelor’s level), in logistics or a commercial field.
  • At least three years on an order desk, in customer service, in inside sales or as a planner.
  • You know how large industrial customers buy: lead times, order quantities, call-off contracts and portals.
  • Experience with an ERP system in a manufacturing company.
  • You speak and write Dutch and English well.

Nice to have:

  • German: some of our customers are in Germany. If you don’t speak it yet, you learn it with us.
  • Experience with forecasts or supply chain integration (EDI, SCSN).
  • You also want to learn operational purchasing.

What you get from us: an organized company and real influence

At Contour, you don’t have to invent the order flow yourself. The processes are in place, the order flow is digital and a planner guards capacity, so you only promise the customer what the factory can deliver. And of course:

  • A salary between €3,776 and €4,894 gross per month under the Metalektro collective labor agreement, depending on your experience.
  • A solid pension scheme via Pensioenfonds PME and travel expense allowance.
  • Room to develop yourself, in depth and in breadth.
  • An office overlooking the factory and short lines: you simply walk over to the team leader or to shipping.

Your team

You work in the Contour supply chain team: the supply chain manager, the planner, the buyers and your colleagues on the order desk. Every order desk coordinator has their own customers. You start with a few customers and take over your portfolio step by step from a colleague; what is feasible, you decide together with the planner and the team leaders. New products and price agreements sit with the account team; you keep the repeat order flow. Toward the customer, you are the logistics face of Contour, on the phone and at the regular alignment meeting.

Working at Contour

Contour supplies specialist sheet metal parts to the high-tech industry: parts for chip machines, medical equipment and logistics systems. With about 200 FTE in Winterswijk, we are big enough for specialists and small enough to know each other. We invest continuously in the machine park, with our own powder coating installation and a cleanroom, and in the people who work with them.
